Accredited certificates: Star Beauty School courses are accredited by The Guild of Beauty Therapists, who have looked at our courses and our teaching and assessment methods and deemed our courses suitable to be insured. These courses are suitable for anyone wishing to work for themselves or in a salon, although some salons may specify an NVQ or VRQ qualification. However as long as you are able to obtain insurance or the salon on your behalf, they would more than likely ask you to complete a trade test to test your skills. Some courses are not available as an NVQ or VRQ qualification, and this information will be included on the course content pages. You will see a price for the accredited diploma and then you will see a price for the add on NVQ/VRQ qualification. NVQ/VRQ qualifications: These are nationally and internationally recognised qualifications. They are set using the standards of HABIA. ‘Habia is the government appointed standards setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa therapy, barbering and African type hair, and creates the standards that form the basis of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs, Apprenticeships, Diplomas and Foundation degrees, as well as industry codes of practice.’ (www.habia.org) They are issued by an awarding body and consist of showing competence, knowledge and understanding of the subject through portfolio building, multi choice tests and practical assessments. NVQ (National Vocational Qualifications): These are qualifications which recognise competence in a specific area of your expertise. They are based on you knowing what you do and why, commonly referred to as underpinning knowledge. They are competence based qualifications and are usually only available at work placements. VRQ (Vocational Related Qualifications): These are qualifications which assess your developing knowledge and understanding. They are typically taken to progress a career. They are knowledge based qualifications and can be taken at work placements or schools and colleges. Which one should I choose? The choice is completely up to the individual. The accredited course is completed first whichever route is chosen and you can either stop there and take your accredited certificate or you can choose to carry on and use that learning towards your NVQ/VRQ qualification. Or you could always take the accredited route and then come back at a later stage and add on the NVQ/VRQ qualification, so you don’t have to decide straight away. Don’t worry too much about whether the course is NVQ or VRQ, they are awarded by the same awarding body and recognised as such but depend on whether they are competence or knowledge based. Who is VTCT? VTCT is the specialist awarding body for the hairdressing and beauty sector and the first non-unitary awarding body accredited to offer the Principal Learning for the new Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies. VTCT has been in existence for over forty years and has been at the forefront of developing the vocational system of qualifications in the United Kingdom. With a head office in Eastleigh, Hampshire, the company employs around forty staff and has a field force of over fifty external verifiers working on a contract basis. VTCT is involved in many of the new initiatives being introduced into the education system, including the embedding of key skills, the move to functional skills and towards e-assessment. At the same time we are keeping abreast of developments in the Framework for Achievement and the introduction of the 14-19 Diplomas. This will enable you to receive a VTCT number. Please inform Star Beauty Schools if you already hold a registration number. Star Beauty Schools Policies for the NVQ/VRQ qualification: The portfolio work needs to be completed following the instructions given with the booklet. You will need to carry out the treatments using a range of procedures and clients. This will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that have been learned. Evidence may take the following forms:
Assessment days take the form of a multi-choice online test and practical assessments. VTCT course are assessed and verified by centre staff. For practical elements you will be observed by your assessor. All your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and cross-referenced to requirements listed in a record of assessment book. Star Beauty Schools has an internal verifier whose role it is to check that your assessment and evidence is valid and reliable and meets VTCT and regulatory requirements. An external verifier, appointed by VTCT will visit Star Beauty Schools to sample and quality-check assessments, the internal verification process and the evidence gathered. You may be asked to attend on a different day from usual if requested by the external verifier. You must attend assessment sessions unless in the case of illness by submission of a doctor’s note or in the case of family bereavement.
